Music is an art which transcends across all borders, cultures and languages, and DJ Honda is one of those who has used this knowledge to the best of his ability in the form of hip-hop.
DJ Honda was born in Hokkaido, Japan, and as a youth became fascinated by the guitar and American rock music. He started a band, the Clique, and in his attempt to realize his musical dreams, left his home and school to move to Tokyo when he was 17.
But the band started to face numerous problems, and Honda was forced to look for alternatives, where he found himself spinning at a dance club in Shizuoka, a small city nearby. His first encounter with hip-hop music and various turntable techniques like scratching had begun; it was then that he realized another outlet for creativity.
Whilst perfecting his techniques, his popularity as a DJ had begun to rise; Honda started to appear on Tokyo radio stations and premier gigs in Tokyo largest clubs. He has also remixed tracks for local companies; and it was through these performances that Honda managed to cultivate valuable connections with people like Arika Bambaata and others who would later appear on his self-titled debut release.
Honda finds in his appreciation of hip-hop complete freedom in creating music, where he is able to discover his own style and sound. His understanding of this genre is deep yet varied, as epitomised when the Association For Independent Music awarded an Honorable Mention in the Indie Award category to Honda for the album H II. He has also made his impression in the hip-hop world as a runner-up in the '92 DJ Battle For World Supremacy and as a judge at most of the International Turntablist Federation (ITF) championships held all over the world.
Besides music, he has also dabbled in fashion retail; he has opened a couple of stores in Japan and plans to fuse his keen eye for design and art with his affinity for music in the form of his U.S. retail flagship store in Soho, New York City.
