Asha Edmund is a name that is not familiar to many. But if you mention the lady who sang Liverpool's anthem You'll Never Walk Alone at the National Stadium during the start of the Liverpool - Singapore soccer match, maybe some would remember.
This petite lady with a very big voice has in fact been around longer than you think. Her first break was with the song Dana into the local charts and since then it's been a good ride for her.
At the press conference/showcase/media presentation of Asha's forthcoming album, Satellite she premiered to the audience three of the songs that can be found on her debut album.
Dubbed as the 'first soul singer from Singapore' the very casually dressed Asha gave a rousing performance to the audience. She might not be as pretty as a supermodel but her vocal prowess automatically suppresses that attribute that might have been a must-have for all budding singers.
Her singles Who's Got My Man? Shadow and Satellite has got us wanting for more. From the sound production to the vocals, the songs didn't sound as if it came from a local production. With the release of Satellite, the album may just put Singapore into the international music map.
The much-awaited 12-track album, Satellite will be released on the 4th of December 2001.
Asha - The Biography
Asha's writing talent and vocal quality gives her the niche above locally produced artist. Her 'soul' attributes are comparative to the likes of Aretha Franklin. With a natural varied pitch range, CreAsian Records confident Asha will be a breakthrough for the local scene.
The album's first single, Satellite has already achieved international status as it had been fully recorded and mastered in Stuttgart, Germany with internationally known music producers Boris Koller and Andreas RauschFrei Rauscher. The music and lyrics of the single was co-written by Asha. The single also portrays Asha, a local act, in a new perspective. It has gone where no other local act has before by experimenting with the House/Garage/R&B/Two-step genres.
Asha's singing saga began at the tiny age of 2..her little self-prancing around the house spewing the words of One Way Ticket. She first appeared on stage, at the age of 8, for a church talentime, which she was later banned from winning consecutively for two years. Her parent, not wanting her to enter the realm of show business at young age, advises her to wait and bag her experiences for later use. Heeding their advise, she studied, worked, played, rebelled, wrote poetry, studied, worked, played harder, focused, wrote songs.
Asha entered the Toni Braxton singing contest, which was held in Modestos by BMG in 1998. after winning it, she reclined from singing and enrolled in the Queensland University of Technology majoring in Drama. She was awarded an Arts Bursary by the National Arts Council in 1999 after submitting a tape and write-up of previous performances.
In the year 2000, armed with a bundle of Daddy's money, she started her own recording label and cut a five-track EP entitled 'Introducing Asha'. The year 2001 saw Asha's single Dana reaching no 9 on the Perfect Ten charts. Her second single Dorian Bay gets significant attention. Asha's 'chilli-padi' attitude starts paying off. She received a notable part in the Singapore run of the hit Broadway musical 'Rent', her unforgettable one being her solo moment in the most recognized song of the musical, Seasons of Love. This acted as a catalyst for her receiving a recording deal with CreAsian Records and collaborating with producer Boris Koller of Hitmen Entertainment in Germany.
Her journey continues..
