Musical theatre fanatics will definitely recognise the name. He is the man who produced many-an award-winning musicals like Les Miserables, Phantom Of The Opera, Cats and Miss Saigon, that is coming to Singapore in August.
Vivamusic.com had the chance to speak to the man himself through a phone-interview from Hong Kong. A friendly and modest man, Sir Cameron Mackintosh wanted to be a producer since he was all but eight years of age. He produced his first show when he was a teenager and before long, Sir Mackintosh was on his way to big producing duties.
Being meticulous in detail, whenever he works on a musical, Sir Mackintosh will work with all the crew members involved to create the look and feel that he wants. From the script to the set design to the costume design, he is involved in some way or another.
Crediting his luck in being able to create many award-winning, highly acclaimed musicals, Sir Mackintosh says the process of creating a musical is not easy. Having been approached, and approaching various authors for their materials to be recreated, it can take months or years before a musical is out on Broadway.
Right now, he is busy working on a new musical that will see the light at the end of the year. Not exactly taking on new tasks right now, Sir Mackintosh hopes to be able to do some relaxing and enjoy his life after 30 plus years of weaving music into stories for the audience.
