The Dish:
Whip up a wedding banquet, complete with a cream wedding cake in an hour.
The Ingredients:
Approximately five carrots, five cucumbers, four cabbages plus all the kitchen utensils you can think of.
The Method:
The four main characters of Head Chef, Sexy Guy, Female, Nephew of Manager come together in an imaginary hotel kitchen. Hateful Manager of the hotel arrives and commands them to conjure up a complete banquet for a wedding. All in one hour.
Instead of going about their business in a nice and orderly manner, the chefs create a big mess as they slice, dice, mix, blend, fry and boil.
Cookin' has received accolades for their performances in Asia and Europe. The brainchild of producer/ actor Seung Whan Song in 1997, Cookin' is somewhat inspired by Tap Dogs and Stomp. But unlike Stomp, the Korean musical has a story attached to it.
We were given a tiny treat of what to expect at the press conference held at Hard Rock Café. Entering the stage, the four characters banged on plastic containers, metal pans, and pots using wooden spoons and even a whisk! Then they proceed to send cabbages, carrots and onions flying off the chopping boards.
Not only that, the unique rhythms of Samulnori gives this non-verbal musical an Asian twist. The basic composition of Samulnori of using five rhythms at varying speeds plus comedy is guaranteed to give you an enjoyable time!
Cookin will be in Singapore from 16 February to 24 February (except 19 February) at the Kallang Theatre. Tickets are sold at all SISTIC outlets, so go grab them now!
