Finally, after a long wait, the musical Miss Saigon is coming to
Singapore. The last of the Big Four musicals to be performed, Miss
Saigon is set to follow the success of Cats, Les Miserables and
The Phantom of the Opera.
The musical was inspired when its composer Claude-Michel Schonberg saw
a photograph in a magazine: a little girl crying as she was parted
forever from her Vietnamese mother and flying to the United States to
be with her father, an ex-GI she had never seen.
Produced by Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Miss Saigon tells the story of
Kim, a Vietnamese girl who falls in love with an American GI during
the Vietnam War era. Unfortunately, they had to part during the
turmoil
of the fall of Saigon, and Kim had to raise their only child, Tam, by
herself.
Les Miserables had the revolving stage and the various theatre
illusions, The Phantom of the Opera had the dropping chandelier
plus the underground tunnels of the Paris Opera House and "Miss Saigon"
has the helicopter rescue scene to excite the audience. The production
team will be bringing a real helicopter into Kallang Theatre, and
don't worry, they will not be flying it through the roof!
Be sure to catch Miss Saigon when it opens at the Kallang Theatre in
August 2001! Tickets are now available at Sistic.
