The Concert :
Here we are at the mammoth Bukit Jalil National Stadium. There are three main concert venues. The National Stadium hosts the local and international acts, the Putra 1 Stadium is for the Chinese acts and the Putra 2 Stadium plays host to the Indian acts.
When we reached there at 4.45pm, we just missed the performances of Flu, Malex and Ella, the rock queen of Malaysia. John's Mistress was just ending their set when we entered the stadium.
The attendance was very surprising. Only 1000 people attended the first day of the concert. The stadium can easily fill up more than 100,000 spectators (the stadium was used for the Commonwealth Games).
Amy and Friends appeared at about 5pm. His livewire act was good enough to get the crowd rocking. The crowd was primarily the rock enthusiasts, which you can see from their dressing.
LO was up next. Jason Lo, the frontman of the band entertained with his signature Chelsea soccer jersey. Seeing that the people were comfortably sitting on the plastic patch on the field, he urged that they stand up before delivering his hit track, Evening News. On that instant, everyone just stood up and went to the front of the stage where they were sort of moving to the song. Kudos to LO for livening up the atmosphere!
Big Country and Derek Trucks performed next. The latter's performance was quite interesting. He infused the sounds of gamelan and tabla to his electrifying guitar numbers. He performs like a pro and you would be surprised that Derek is only 21 years old! Although I'm a non-guitar listener, his music is somewhat entertaining.
Completing the line-up for the night was Afro Asia, Kristal, Ramli Sarip & Rentak All Star Band, Eric Sardinas and Toto's Bobby Kimball.
The Putra 1 Stadium was also rocking with their own mix of music. Grasshopper, Kenny B and the other acts took turns to share the limelight. But the highlight of the day was definitely the return of Paul Wong formerly of the Beyond fame. He is back with his new band, Hann. They belted out alternative rock numbers, which is very different from his Beyond days.
The next day saw FTG, Ferhad, Ning Baizura, All-4-One, Black Maria, Poetic Ammo, Amir Yussof, Jethro Tull, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani warming the stage.
Apart from the G3, Sugar Ray pulled in the biggest attendance. Mark McGrath was prancing up and down the stage and seemed not to run out of breath. Sugar Ray performed all of their hits and was voted the most entertaining act of the day!
The dramatic moment for the two whole days was probably the no-show by G3. On Saturday, the whole event was ran over by four hours. No one expected the police to appear on stage and stop Joe Satriani in the middle of his set. But sadly, the authorities were more powerful and everything had to be stopped. Sadly, Joe only performed two and a half songs. Everyone was anticipating the first live show by G3 after two years.
The crowd almost went into a rampage when they were told that there would be a no-show. Well, who wouldn't?
Definitely Rentak Asia didn't leave a good impression to the people who turned up and paid RM 180 for two days. But can the organisers return next year In March and hopefully do a better one than this? Only time can tell.
