For the first time, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra brings to you The Two Viennese Schools series. In this series, the SSO will explore the music of Vienna from the late 18th century to the early 20th century.
The contribution of the First Viennese School is significant. Without it, the world would not have heard the beautiful works of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), the graceful symphonies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), or experienced the brilliance of Ludwig van Beethovans symphonies (1770-1827) .
The Second Viennese School, represented by Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), Alban Berg (1885-1935) and Anton Webern (1883-1945), injected its own character which saw the demise of the tonal system - revolutionizing musical composition and altering its course forever.
This division into two schools may however be too simplistic and convenient; the greater issue is the enormous impact each school made on its contemporaries and the generations that came after it.
In presenting this series, the SSO takes on the important task of exploring, in five concerts, the works that changed musical history. So, let SSO take you on a ride into the musical heritage of Vienna in The Two Viennese Schools!
