Lan Shui ~ conductor, Pascal Roge ~ piano
Having conducted to a full-house concert on 18 August, SSOs Music Director Lan Shui returns to lead the SSO over two evenings with renowned French pianist Pascal Rogé. Pascal Rogés musicianship and virtuosity is not limited to French music, of which he is a world authority, as he amply displays in Mozart's imposing yet gentle Piano Concerto No. 25, arguably the composer's grandest work of this genre.
Pascal Rogé has recorded extensively and has several awards to his name. His recording of Poulencs piano works received Gramophones Award for Best Instrumental Recording; his interpretation of the two Ravel concertos with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony was awarded both a Grand Prix du Disque and an Edison Award.
The overture to one of Rossini's many operas, this one based on the perennially enchanting tale of La Cenerentola, opens the evenings concert. To close the evenings performance is the Seventh Symphony of Dvorak, a work that is full of Bohemian melodies and dance rhythms.
A much-performed concerto within the Romantic period, the First Violin Concerto is virtuosic and lyrical and constituted one of three works contributing to Bruch's reputation as a composer. The SSO also plays the suite from Nobilissima Visione, a ballet by Paul Hindemith based on the life and good works of St. Francis of Assisi. The concert closes with the cheerful Third Symphony of Tchaikovsky, a work written in the tradition of his much-loved ballets. It is nicknamed the Polish Symphony because of the rousing polonaise that closes the work.
Pre-concert Talk at 7.15pm on both nights by Lionel Choi.
