A mention of South Africa and one would instantly conjure up images of lush sceneries and rich cultural traditions be it in the cities or the countryside. This richness has long been known to be exhibited by African art-forms from vocal to visual arts. In conjunction with the South Africa Week organized by the South African High Commission, the SSO is proud to present the Soweto String Quartet (SSQ) with their five-piece band on 5 September, 8.15pm at the Victoria Concert Hall.
This performance is set to create an experience vastly different from what Victoria Concert Hall audiences are familiar with and one that is certain to delight listeners from every walks or life. SSQs sound and music is so accessible that it will appeal to a vast array of musical tastes.
The SSQ and their five-piece band is one of South Africa's most successful and enjoyable exports with a sound that is fresh, vibrant and funky. They will perform a selection of songs including original compositions as well as songs by other composers, (Wimoweh or The Lion Sleeps Tonight plus songs by Sting and Paul Simon from his Graceland album). The nine musicians create an upbeat atmosphere from the start with a mix of classical and pop instruments creating music that is both accessible and interesting.
SSO welcome you to an evening with this group of musicians who have performed for Nelson Mandelas historic Walk to Freedom, in Spring 2000 and the Diana Tribute Concert at Althorpe. Experience their unique and vibrant cross-over of native African township rhythms, pop, jazz, classical styles and infectious enthusiasm which has made them famous and has become their trademark.
To complete the experience, audience may present their ticket stubs for the concert and enjoy a pre-concert dinner set at $20 at the MaMa Africa on 5 September or a 10% discount off at the MaMa Africa or the African Heartbeat restaurants valid till 31 Oct. For more information, call 276 9170.
