After being in partnership with Pat Metheny for 25 years, Lyle
Mays decided to come out with his fourth solo project
entitled "Solo Improvisations for Extended Piano".This album is unique because it has no prior arrangements whatsoever
before recording. Mays
just worked on the tunes as he played along. With the help
of modern piano technology Mays was able to improvise the piano tunes that has been played before.
The first track, "This Moment" was created on the piano just before
the album was made. Clearly, he exhibits the characteristics
of a piano maestro. During his heyday, Mays
was often left out from the limelight when he was with Metheny.
But it was Mays’ ingenious piano skills and gifted talent in song composing
that should get the credit. In this album, it is the evidence
of his dexterity.
