Emily Saxe

Fildza Md Zin | 18 Jan 2001

Emily Saxe has a voice that can be described as “merging Barbra Streisand's lyrics-conscious expressivity with the husky alto sparkle of Bette Midler.”

Emily Saxe will be in Singapore as part of her Time After Time concert tour of Asia and Australia. The concert will include classic jazz standards by Gershwin and Porter, more recent songs by Cindy Lauper, Sting and Michel LeGrand as well as her original materials.

Critics have described her voice as “expensive fine aged whiskey -- smooth but with a bit of a bite,” and “early-1960s Streisand with a sexy jazz feel.” Miss Saxe's approach to song interpretation focuses on the lyric and on telling the story intended by the songwriter. As Miss Saxe states: “…you can find good stories in all types of music from jazz, to pop to country-the key to a memorable performance is for the vocalist to explore these lyrics, dissect them and reinterpret them in a personal-and original-way.”

Miss Saxe is touring with a jazz quartet that includes pianist Don Gomes, one of Asia and Australia's finest jazz pianists and represented Australia in the Marisol International Jazz competition. The quartet also includes drummer and percussionist Luis Soliano, who has toured with Sarah Vaughn, Shirley Bassey and The Electric Light Orchestra. Tour performances are scheduled at the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre and Singapore's Jubilee Hall and The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit in Bangkok

With two Top-Ten CDs already to her credit, this tour introduces Miss Saxe's latest release Time After Time. In this CD Miss Saxe applies her considerable vocal and interpretive skills to a selections of standards, covers and original work. The result is a collection of unforgettable songs performed by a master vocalist and songwriter.
