Fan Mailis sinuous, sexy, and soulful, filled with slammin' dance
numbers and smoothed-out ballads. The trio Lopes, Tionne
"T-Boz" Watkins, and Rozanda "Chilli"
Thomas had plenty of help in constructing the album:
It's executive-produced by LaFace stalwarts L.A. Reid and
Babyface(who reconciled with the group), Dallas Austin, and the group members themselves.
Adding to the already crowded mix are producers Darryl Simmons,
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jermaine Dupri, and Kevin "Shekspere"
Briggs.
That's an awful lot of cooks, and it's a wonder this soufflé didn't
fall from the weight of the credits alone. Instead, Fan
Mail is buoyant, assertive, and even crazier, sexier,
and cooler than its predecessor. If the lyrics aren't particularly
deep criticizing social vultures of both sexes ("Silly
Ho," "No Scrubs"), conventional standards of
beauty ("Unpretty"), and offering the usual observations
on love and its pitfalls the songs are delivered with
razor-sharp precision and with up-to-the-minute hip-hop, pop,
and soul production values. The street-savvy "I'm So
Good at Being Bad" is as nasty as it wants to be.
In fact, TLC is so hot with nominations. They lead the nominees
for the 14th annual Soul Train Music Awards, where
Fan Mail received two nods, for best R&B/soul album
by a group, band, or duo and R&B/ soul or rap album of
the year. No Scrubs is up for best R&B/soul
single by a group, band, or duo.
Also, at the Grammys Award, TLC has been nominated
in all the categories, including the top three most prestigious
categories:
1) Record of the Year: "No Scrubs" (for best song on
an album)
2) Album of the Year: FanMail
3) Song of the Year: "Unpretty" (T-Boz and Dallas
