Geri Halliwell | Schizophonic
Say this about Geri Halliwell, the erstwhile Ginger Spice:
At least the 36-, um, 26-year-old singer looks good. Dearly
departed from the Spice Girls juggernaut, Halliwell is trying
to make her own way as a more refined pop presence. She'll need
all the help she can get.
"Look at Me," her first single, is a '60s-era, spy-film redux
with more glossy sheen than your average Mercedes commercial.
It's against such stylized backing tracks -- and there are plenty
on Schizophonic -- that Halliwell's limitations as a real singer
become vivid. There are no other lukewarm voices to hide behind
(and how's that for irony), only her own marginal, amazingly flat
voice. Clearly, Shirley Bassey she's not. |
