I have always loved Lisa Stansfield's distinctive and soulful voice, which is why I applaud this brand new release. With the influx of yet fully developed teenagers like Britney and Christina proclaiming to be divas, many adult listeners can finally heave a sigh of relief to hear this true-blue songstress strut her stuff.
Face Up is Lisa's new album in 4 years. Asked why she took such a long time to produce this album, she feels that an album should only be released when there is a great collection of songs. Agreed; and her new effort stays true to her unique blend of soul, jazz, R&B and pop. However, listening to the tracks on Face Up, one may be prompted to ask if the feminine songbird has taken a more carefree approach to her music. It seems Lisa has aged gracefully into maturity as pleasant experiences in her life this past couple of years have lightened her poignant vocals. Predominantly upbeat, tracks like I've Got Something Better, Let's Just Call It Love and Candy will just leap you into the grooving mood.
Call me an old romantic but Lisa's break into new territory does little for me. Wish On Me and Lisa's personal favourite Didn't I gives you a peep into her heartrending expressiveness, but I say give me All Woman and So Natural anytime to get me soaked in nostalgia.
For a Lisa Stansfield effort, this album is only above average. Nonetheless, it is still music to the ears and pleases with Lisa's brand of wholesome honesty and clarity of vocals. Move aside, Britney; here comes the real diva!
