Their debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Their single, Never Ever was a chart topper and a multi award-winning single. On top of that, they won two Brit Awards for Best Single and Best Video, an MTV Award for Best Breakthrough Artist. They have also been nominated for Best Group, Best Album and Best Single at the same awards and two nominations at the MOBO Awards for Best Single and Best Group, for their debut album.
In 1999, they completed two sell-out UK tours without even releasing a record! Exhausted from all that success and fame, the Saints took a well-deserved break at the end of that same year but talks of releasing their much-anticipated second album went around.
Somewhere in the year 2000, Shaznay teamed up with William Orbit to write a track for The Beach soundtrack. Pure Shores was the first single taken of that soundtrack. And it was also All Saints' first single for over a year. It was also the very single that gave them their biggest No 1 hit ever.
Resting on their laurels was not what the Saints had in mind. Soon they were recording their second album in New York, Los Angeles and London. In between recordings, they were appearing in various European festivals, which included the V2000, Creamfields and Langelands.
Saints and Sinners finished recording in August 2000. William Orbit produced another single from that album, Black Coffee. The new album proved that All Saints' music matured with their age. Although the services of previous album producers, Karl 'K-Gee' Gordon and Jonny Douglas are still sought, Saints and Sinners is packed with a new flavour, thanks to William Orbit.
With the exotic blend of the group members, Melanie Blatt (25) is of French / English descent, Shaznay T Lewis (25) is of Jamaican and Barbadian descent brought up in London and the Appleton sisters, Nicole (25) and Natalie (26) grew up in Canada, England and USA. Their album is refreshing compared to the onslaught of bubblegum pop that was served lately.
The tremendous amount of fame and success that was amassed by the Saints should be applauded. It was not only their looks that contributed to their success but it was also their sheer talents in songwriting and performing their songs and of course, their immaculate vocals.
For three years, Melanie and Shaznay took the responsibility to front the still green All Saints and were manipulated by people who knew how to take advantage of the situation. It was when Natalie and Nicole joined them that the deal with London Records took off. And as usual, the rest is history.
All Saints is definitely an all girl group that has got the talents. You go girls!
