Christina Aguilera
Long blonde hair, vivid blue eyes, five feet tall and an impressive well-toned body,
Christina Maria Aguilera has come far since her Mickey Mouse Club (MMC) days.
Then, she was the young, cheery Mousketeer that brightened up the sets every time.
Performing since she was eight, Christina was in MMC for two years, alongside
Britney Spears, Justin and J.C. of *N Sync as well as Keri Russell from Felicity.
After MMC, she then went to hone her musical skills overseas.
Recording a duet, All I Wanna Do with Japanese pop star Keizo
Nakanishi in 1997, Christina went on to perform in Brasov, Romania.
But this feisty singer wanted more, I always wanted to have my own
album recorded and released before I graduated high school, she said.
After returning to the States in 1998, Christina auditioned to sing
Reflection for the Disney animated film Mulan. When Disney heard
her demo tape, they immediately knew whom they wanted. Within 48 hours,
Christina was rushed to a Los Angeles studio and recorded the single
Reflection, The song's theme - the struggle to establish your identity
- was something I could really relate to as a teenage girl myself.
In that same week, she signed up with RCA Records. Mulan was released
in June 1998 and Reflection turned into a Top 15 A/C single. Christina
even performed it live on CBS This Morning as well as The Donnie &
Marie Show. The single went on to garner a Golden Globe nomination for
Best Original Song in A Motion Picture.
By this time, Christina was well on her way to achieving her
dream of recording her very own album. The first single from
this album was Genie In A Bottle. It stayed at Number 1 for
five consecutive weeks and it rocketed her self-titled debut
album to Number 1 upon its release in August 1999.
Christina's second single was equally popular. What A Girl Wants
was the Billboard Hot 100's Number 1 of 2000 and this pushed
her album platinum six times over! In February this year,
Christina was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
and Best Newcomer, which she won, beating the likes of Britney
Spears, Macy Gray and even Kid Rock. It was an incredible shock for me
I was completely unprepared.
My album had been out the least amount of time compared to everyone
else, so I thought there was no way I'd win. But I was overwhelmed,
shocked and overjoyed all at the same time. For a singer who has been in the music industry for less than a year,
Christina's achievements are indeed amazing. With two smash hit singles
from her debut album and even a Grammy under her belt, Christina is set
to hit the charts again, this time with her latest single, I Turn To You,
a ballad that truly displays the singer's powerful vocals. With a new
Spanish album and a holiday album filled with seasonal favourites on the
way, Christina continues to show the world that she is no flash in the pan.
