Every band says their latest record is the best, Andrea Corr says, But I really believe it. It's who we are and we're very proud of it.
In Blue is the Corrs' finest musical achievement to date - an album that reflects everything you have always loved about the band and yet at the same time presents them as you have never heard them before.
I suppose there are a lot of different vibes. At times it's almost R&B and soulful and at other times it's rock. It reflects how we've progressed and what we've learnt, Andrea adds.
It's the most versatile album we've made, Jim Corr agrees. We love so many varied types of music and that is now coming out in what we do. We've a Corrs style in the vocals and the Irish elements that is very identifiable and provides a common thread. Beyond that there are so many flavours on this record. I think a few people are going to be surprised by that.
Virtually unknowns almost five years ago, The Corrs have come a long way since their first album, Forgiven Not Forgotten in September 1995. Cultivating a love for music since young by their parents, The Corrs have always dreamt of performing. Each sibling has his and her very own instrument that they have honed to perfection, Jim, guitar and keyboards, Sharon, classical violin, Caroline, drums and percussion and of course, Andrea with her tin whistle.
But the road to fame was not easy for the brother-sisters team as no record company wanted to sign them on. Pop recording labels felt that The Corrs were too folk and yet on the other hand, folk labels felt that the foursome was too pop.
Then in a stroke of luck that changed the course of history, The Corrs went back to New York to try again and they ended up performing, unannounced, at Hit Factory to Grammy-winning producer David Foster. Foster, who was working with Michael Jackson at that time, was impressed with The Corrs' acoustic version of Runaway and Forgiven Not Forgotten. And with that, The Corrs had their recording deal.
Their first album was an instant hit in Ireland as well as all over the world, gaining platinum many times over. Their second album Talk On Corners signified the change in music style for the group. Edgier, more guitar based, yet incorporating the various Irish elements that the group is now well-known for, the album that was released in October 1997 made them one of the biggest groups in the world. With hit singles like Only When I Sleep, Dreams and What Can I Do, this was the album that really introduced The Corrs to the world.
Since then, Jim, Sharon, Caroline and Andrea have released a special remixed version of Talk On Corners as well as an MTV Unplugged album. The last album came as a surprise to many as most bands that had recorded unplugged albums had a huge number of albums behind them. Nevertheless, The Corrs did not disappoint with the unplugged, performing their hits from the previous two albums as well as new singles like Radio and At Your Side.
Of course, no group is complete without their very own tour and this was what The Corrs set out to do when they released their second album. As it was their very first, massive world tour, The Corrs were of course jittery, but all these fears were put to rest as each of their concerts were sell-outs.
After all these success and almost 2 years since their second album was released, The Corrs decided that it was time to record their third album. This time around, they were going to do all the songwriting for the album. In Blue displays the growing confidence of all the members of the group as major songwriters as well as performers. But in the midst of making the album, The Corrs' mother, Jean, passed away. It was one of the most difficult and emotional times for the Corr family and it is shown in the album as well, as In Blue is dedicated to her memory and one of the tracks, No More Cry was specially written for their father as a form of encouragement.
The Corrs have come a long way since their discovery back in 1991 on the set of The Commitments and through their hard work, they have achieved the success that they have always dreamt of. With In Blue, it seems to many that they have finally found the right hit making formula. Everybody is asking if this is the definitive Corrs album, says Sharon, Well, it is for now. But just wait unitl you hear the next one
We'll definitely be waiting!
