She was all but five years old when she stole her first recorder. A year later, Dido was on her way to the Guildhall School of Music in London. Somewhat a child prodigy, Dido's teenage years were spent listening to music ranging from Clash to Gregory Issacs to Duran Duran as well as going around UK with her classical music mates.
It was only when she was 16, after listening to Ella Filtzgerald, when Dido began to follow her true passion. Singing with various bands, moving in and around London, Dido appeared on the debut album of Faithless, a band that was formed by her brother, Rollo in 1995.
The group went on to sell five million copies and Dido toured with them for the next two years. Record execs happened to chance on one of her demos at that time and Dido was invited to meet Clive Davis. The meeting was fruitful and recordings for Dido's debut album started.
Titled No Angel, it is produced by her brother, Rollo, Rick Nowels and Youth. The album does not stick to only one particular music style, instead, it weaves its way through, Dido's warm acoustic sounds and her brother's beats and electronic tunes.
It was this unique point that got the critics raving, starting with Time magazine, Singular, heavenly music. A sparkling debut. Dido was also kept busy as the opening act for Sting on a couple of dates.
TV audiences over the world were treated to a sample of her music, when Here With Me was chosen to be the theme to the sci-fi TV series, Roswell. The single was played in its entirety during the season finale and yet bad-boy rapper, Eminem on his latest single, Stan, sampled another of her single, Thank You. Thank You was also featured on Sliding Doors, a movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
With all this upcoming publicity for Dido's debut album, it's no wonder she has pushed past the No 1 position on Billboard Heatseekers chart and is now climbing up the Top 200 Album chart. A prodigy indeed!
