Tiffany
Born on October 2, 1971 in Norwalk, CA, Tiffany's career began at the age of five singing songs mature beyond her years - songs such as Delta Dawn and Devil Woman. Within months, she was singing at fairs and openings across the country and appearing on talent shows such as Star Search.
By the time Tiffany was 13 years old, her voice and determination landed her in front of the producer team of George Tobin and Brad Schmidt. Soon after, she landed a recording contract with MCA Records and began work on her first album - the self-titled debut Tiffany.
To promote the album, a plan was hatched to have Tiffany perform nation-wide at shopping malls and within weeks she was singing to over 5,000 screaming fans in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mall managers started to look at Tiffany differently after Salt Lake City. The turnouts were getting enormous, explained Schmidt. It started out as a marketing tool and as a way to get her in front of people and it turned out into a phenomenon. Overnight, Tiffany had become a pop culture and teen icon featured in magazines, newspapers, and even on The Tonight Show. Both I Think We're Alone Now and Could've Been were US #1 singles and I Saw Him Standing There was a top ten included on her debut album in 1987. Tiffany even knocked the King of Pop Michael Jackson out of the number one spot on the album charts - humble beginnings with a mall tour had unbelievably led to two number one records and album sales past the six million mark. Her second album, Hold An Old Friend's Hand went double platinum and included the top ten hit All This Time.
By the early 1990s, Tiffany decided to take a break. People think I disappeared. But I took time away to be a person, not just a personality, she says. I wanted to grow as a person, a mother, a wife and as an artist. I didn't feel like I had to be in the public's eye when I didn't have anything to say.
With the 2001 release of The Color of Silence, Tiffany is back with her first full-length record in over 10 years. The new album, by the rejuvenated star, includes 7 songs written or co-written by Tiffany, an accomplishment she is especially proud of. I have really challenged myself to write the best songs I can and I feel like I have been able to stretch beyond what people may expect to hear from me - this time, I had to do it my way.
If the reviews of The Color of Silence are any indication of Tiffany's career ahead, it appears she may be back in it for the long run.
