Introducing the Cosmic Spiders…

Just who are the Cosmic Spiders? What are they and exactly what kind of music do they play?

I asked the same questions to these guys when I had the chance to go one-on-one with them. Dressed like your average Singaporean males, they are still going through their National Service.

Cosmic Spiders are made up of four mates who met during their years in polytechnic. Delfi (vocals, bass), Stepney (guitars) and Shawn (drums) first formed the band in November 1996. They were originally known as “December” because all of them are December babies. But in September 1997, Deva joined the band to allow Delfi to concentrate more on singing. When Deva completed the line-up, the name “December” was changed to “Cosmic Spiders”.

The name “Cosmic Spiders” was heavily influenced by 70s star, David Bowie's band. The Spiders have been together for about five years now and they sacrificed their Sundays, the only free day they had, solely for jamming.

“People go to church on Sunday but we jam on Sunday,” remarked Stepney. The jamming 'studio'? Deva's house.

When I first got hold of their album, I couldn't put down a word to classify the album. I thought it sounded something like punk rock but the next track proved me wrong. Basically the Cosmic Spiders album has a mix of everything from punk, rock and blues. This comes as no surprise because each of them has their own set of influences. From the sounds of Primus, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Sex Pistols to 70s and 80s rock outfits like Ozzy Osbourne and U2.

The Spiders have been doing gigs locally but this marks their first attempt at recording an album. To officially launch the album, the Spiders have decided to release the album in Australia before releasing it here. The band felt that the music of Cosmic Spiders will be more accepted in Down Under. They will be pushing their album by playing the songs over the college radios there.

Come June, the Spiders will be the first local band to release their album on foreign shores before bringing it back home.

“As for now, we're waiting to finish NS. And after that it's Cosmic Spiders all the way!”
